Holiday Orders for Recipe Illustrations

I'm still accepting a couple more Custom Recipe Illustrations for the Holidays! (through Thanksgiving) If you want some details, drop me a line at Jessica@firstpancakestudio.com or check out the listing on Etsy.  Here's some of my favorite custom recipe prints from last year:

 Croquetas de la Abuela

Thanks to the link on BuzzFeed I've been getting lots of requests this year!  I love hearing people's stories about their family recipes and seeing photos of them cooking in their kitchen's.

Grandma Sember's Stuffed Cabbages

It reminds me that while the holidays are often busy and stressful... I really do look forward to spending time with my family and preparing a delicious meal together.

Croquetas Recipe Illo

Last, but not least...  I wanted to share one of my all time favorite custom recipes, for  Croquetas de la Abuela!  I was absolutely thrilled to illustrate Anna's Grandma's recipe for her family.

Although I speak no Spanish (I took high school French and a little Japanese post college)  I had an English translation and the Spanish version of the recipe to guide me.

I tried to find some examples of Spanish packaging and also looked at ceramics, and embroidery for pattern ideas.  Packaging in other languages is always fun to look at. Sometimes its really obvious what food you're getting and other times it's a complete mystery!  Quite a few times in Japan I thought I was getting something with cheese and really it was mayo.. yuck!

I wanted to bring a lot of bold color to this piece so it felt really festive.  I imagine frying up a bunch of croquetas to share with family at a party since they are bite size.

Here's a similar recipe I found for Ham Croquettes !  I'd like to try making them at home next tim we have a bunch of people over to eat them.  Valentine's Day is fast approaching,  Tomorrow is the last day to order a Custom Recipe Illustration for your honey, in time for Valentine's Day!

Stuffed Cabbage Illo!

Thanks to the mention on Etsy's blog I got a couple more orders for Custom Recipe Illustrations.  I love illustrating family recipes and  I wanted to share one I finished up right before the Holidays.

Stuffed Cabbages!

I've never made stuffed cabbages so I did a little research on the origins.  Stuffed cabbages are mostly part of  Jewish/Eastern European tradition and that lead me to look at Polish, Hungarian and Russian embroidery for motif and pattern inspiration.

Here's a similar recipe over on Smitten Kitchen if you want to try making your own.

I wanted this piece to feel folky and warm just like the dish.  I bet stuffed cabbages would be perfect dish to serve this time of year!

2014- Year of the Lumberjack!

Here it is my 2014 Lumberjack tea towel calendar!!  As soon as I got my fabric in the mail I threw it in the wash and stitched it right up.

If you also have a huge crush on lumberjacks, this towel might be for you...

Here's some close ups of the animals; goats wearing hats (inspired by the Sound of Music puppets!), gitty hedgehogs, sneaky raccoons and guitar playing birds.

Seriously can you tell how much fun I had working on this?

This may be my favorite tea towel calendar yet!

Check it out in my Etsy shop!

Happy Friday and have an awesome weekend!

This is something I've been wanting to do for awhile, because I think these would be a lot of fun to work on.  The above recipe is my Mom's Mac and Cheese!  (One of my absolute favorite recipes!) I think a custom recipe illustration with hand-lettered title is an awesome and personal gift!  I'm planning on printing these at 9"x 12", but since the final is digital I can easily print multiples or larger.  If you have questions or want to place an order email me: Jessica@firstpancakestudio.com  HAPPY FRIDAY!!!

Chicken Calendar

I drew some chickens! Then turned them into a tea towel design for this week's Spoonflower contest... As if I didn't have enough on my plate. (Next weekend I'm flying down to Houston for Quilt Market) yikes!!

I really enjoyed making a tea towel calendar last year and people seemed to like the whole tea towel calendar things, so I'll probably put a couple up in the Ol'Etsy Shoppe.

It's a nice opportunity to design something that serves a functional purpose!  Even if it is chicken illustrations on a calendar...  Hope you guys like it!  If you do, go vote for my design on Spoonflower.   Voting is open till Tuesday and after that SF is having a 2 for 1 sale on fat quarters from the 25th- 31st!

Under the Ground

It's finally here! Poster #2 for Fertile Underground!
I had a lot of fun doing the hand lettering for the title and the bottom info.

This time around I did the design and gladly handed it off to a silk screen expert to do the actual printing of the posters. I can't tell you what a relief that was!

One of my favorite parts is this mouse... I drew lots of mice as a kid.

Fertile Underground was awesome enough to give me a dozen or so prints to sell. Thanks again to Kristina for doing such an awesome job printing these!

I'll have them up in the Etsy shop for sale with the first poster! I just finished the design for poster #3 and I can't wait to see it printed.

East Greenwich Art Festival

Just a sneak peak of new fabrics and kitchen stuff I'll have for sale at the East Greenwich Art Festival.

New pot holders in my "tree and leaves" fabric.

I finally got around to sewing full length aprons. I'm hoping these will be a big hit in cupcake print and fruit print as well!

If your looking for something to do tomorrow then drive on down to East Greenwich! It's at 1408 Division Rd and it looks like there will also be a farmers market there too! I'll be at my table 10-5 with art prints, kitchen goods, stationery and some pencil cases.

You've "bean on my mind..."

Art Festivals and Craftshows are a lot of work, weeks of sewing, ordering and organizing stuff all with my fingers crossed for good weather. However, I've found that it's a great opportunity to get direct feedback and that's really helped me make decisions about my work. (which things to discontinue, what needs to be tweaked and pricing too!) I have been busy busy busy working on some new items for the East Greenwich Art Festival coming up Sept 3rd!

I just got these babies in the mail yesterday!

I know, I know... I'm super cheesy. But the berry one just seemed so right that I dared myself to come up with three other veggie greetings.

And I did!

I figured these could each work for multiple occasions and they had a sense of humor... vegetables shouldn't take themselves too seriously.

Next week is crunch time, but I'm hoping to photograph a few more items before I head out for the sale. I will also post these in my Etsy shop too! If your going to be in the area please come say hi! I'll be there 10-5, 1408 Division Road.

Fertile Underground Posters

I have quite a few projects I've been working on since I last posted. Today I wanted to share this one with you. Fertile Underground is a local group mostly comprised of farmers and artists working hard to open a grocery and cafe on the West Side of Providence.

There store will feature organic, local and fair trade food as well as baked goods once their kitchen is done. There are very few places to find local fruits and veggies on the West Side, so I know they will be very popular once they open!

When I saw they were looking for an artist to design an edition of 4 silkscreen posters to promote their store I jumped at the chance! (An opportunity to do some printmaking, draw food and experiment with hand lettering?-Im soo in!)

And it's been awhile since I've done any printmaking...

And I've never done a 4 color print.

I had forgotten how much work goes into making an excellent print, before the ink is even opened....
First I did some quick veggie drawings, finished them in ink and arranged them digitally. Then, I colored the poster, separated them into layers on the computer. I printed them out onto large pieces of acetate, coated the screens, exposed them and TA-DAH!!!!

The screens were all ready to go.
This week I teamed up with my amazing friend Andrea to complete about 80 4-layer prints for Fertile Underground.
After a lot of hard work and deep conversation about unicorns we managed to get a good rhythm down and we finished!

These posters are on pieces of paper 19"x 24", so I hope they will eye catching when they are hung up!

I have 10 available for purchase, so contact me if you want one!
